The Mythical Founding of Rome (c. 753 BCE)

According to Roman mythology, the city was founded by Romulus, who, along with his twin brother Remus, was raised by a she-wolf after being abandoned on the banks of the Tiber River. The tale says Romulus killed Remus in a dispute and became the first king of Rome in 753 BCE, the traditional date of Rome’s founding. Though mythological, the story reflects Rome’s belief in its divine origins and destiny of greatness.

The Roman Kingdom (753–509 BCE)

Rome’s earliest political form was a monarchy. Seven legendary kings ruled during this period, combining Latin, Etruscan, and Sabine traditions. The last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, was overthrown in 509 BCE, marking the end of the monarchy and the birth of the Roman Republic. The expulsion of the king laid the foundation for Roman ideas about liberty, law, and citizen participation.

The Roman Republic (509–27 BCE)

The Republic introduced a system of checks and balances with elected officials, such as consuls and senators. Rome expanded rapidly through military conquest, diplomacy, and alliances. It fought in the Punic Wars against Carthage and conquered much of the Mediterranean world.

However, the Republic was also plagued by social inequality, political corruption, and civil wars. Famous figures such as Julius Caesar, Cicero, and Cato the Younger played central roles in these turbulent times.
